Why is my refund less than the amount on my tax return?
A reason why you may receive less refund than what was on your tax return is if you owe past due debts such as:
State income tax
State Unemployment Compensation Debts
Or certain Federal Nontax Debts such as student loans
If you owe any of mentioned, all or some of your refund may be used to pay the past-due amount.
